When choosing which cooking equipment to take with you it’s important you devise the type of meals you will be eating and the number of people in your party. Try to plan some recipes in advance as this is the best way of planning what you’ll need and should help prevent you from taking cooking equipment away with you that you don’t actually need. If you have a small party then you probably only need a small backpacking stove where as if you are in a large party then you may need numerous stoves but at least you can share the load.

Always consider the size and weight of any equipment you need for backpacking cooking as you will have to carry it in rucksacks between camps.

Safety is a big issue with cooking equipment, particularly stoves. They run on a variety of fuels some of which are more volatile and prone to exploding than others. The safest option of stove are non-pressurized alcohol stoves and they are also some of the lightest available. When choosing the fuel of your stove always consider it’s availability on the entirety of your trip otherwise you may end up carrying a useless piece of equipment!

You will also need to take a backpacking knife with you to prepare food, particularly if you plan on hunting or fishing to provide part of your diet.  Those who are more in tune with the countryside may not even need a backpacking stove and instead prefer to cook on an open fire. This should not be attempted by novices, but when it’s done well there is nothing better than the taste an open fire gives food.
