Backpacking Pants

Backpacking pants are a variant of normal trousers that are specially adapted for the rigours of a backpacking adventure. This article will discuss some of the factors to look for when buying a pair and should help ensure that you have a comfortable backpacking trip.

Material

The material that backpacking pants are made of is important. It should  offer a degree of water resistance but if they do get wet it’s important that they dry quickly. It’s for this reasons that jeans should not be worn when backpacking on long distances – they take forever to dry! The quality of the material used is also important. Most backpackers will spend a large amount of time on their hands and knees putting up tents and building camps so it’s important that backpacking pants can withstand these activities. Some of the better models reinforce the knee and bottom areas exactly for this reason.

Another activity that backpackers like to partake in is building fires, either for cooking or  simply for enjoyment. Always ensure your backpacking pants are flame repellent which will ensure they don’t catch fire.

Terrain

It’s important to consider the terrain you will be backpacking in before you purchase a pair of pants. If you are going backpacking in the winter you will need much thicker pants than if you were going in the summer.  Summer backpacking pants are specifically designed to keep you cool and remove any perspiration from the skin.

Style

The main variable with backpacking pants is the number of pockets they have and the colour. This is entirely personal reference and dependant on what you plan on carrying in your pockets.

Brands

All the traditional backpacking equipment brands manufacture backpacking pants.  Our favourite brand is Northface as they not only offer stylish equipment but it’s built to last for a long time. This means that it is worth paying the slightly higher purchase price as you can be sure you will have the pants for years to come.
