Backpacking Quilt

by Tom_Shurville on April 27, 2010

Backpacking quilts are not for hardcore backpackers as they are simply too large to carry in a rucksack. They are much better suited to those that travel to a camp site by road rather than foot and are popular with those that do.

Rather than a sleeping bag which is a cocoon shape, a backpacking quilt is more like a traditional duvet and lies on top of the sleeping pad. They are popular as they make people feel more at home and as a result people tend to have a better nights sleep. It makes camping more of a enjoyable experience and encourages people to do it again and again.

There are backpacking quilts designed for each season and different models are made of different materials to provide more/less protection as necessary. If you are going to be experiencing very low temperatures I would always recommend a sleeping bag rather than a quilt as it insulates you much better and prevents any warm air being lost out the sides.

Rather than buying a backpacking quit, it is possible to make your own. There is all the information you require at this blog here. Always follow the instructions closely as you could end up very cold one night if you don’t!
