Great advances have been made in backpacking towel technology in recent years which are a real bonus for backpackers. The days of having to lug a damp old bath towel around with you, that once wet, weighs are fairly significant amount (not to mention takes up considerable room) are over.

The latest backpacking towels are made from a wickable material called microfiber that draws moisture from the skin. It’s a soft material that is pleasant to touch and won’t cause any rashes or chaffing. Due to its high level of absorbency, the same material is often used in baby’s diapers, and as such backpacking towels make an excellent travel companion if you’re travelling with young children.

This microfiber towels are considerably cleaner than a standard backpack towel as they dry so much quicker. This ensures that bacteria doesn’t have enough time to grow and multiply. I’ve had old style backpacking towels that don’t even dry from one day to the next as they are always stuck at the bottom of a rucksack, I can only imagine the number of germs it contained after 4 months away!

The weight of these towels makes them ideal for backpackers that want to travel lightweight. A 24inch x 12inch towel can weigh as little as .5 OZ so it’s possible to carry more than one in your bag. Some people will use extra towels for cleaning surfaces, as wind brakes or even first aid equipment. There are also health benefits from making your backpack as light as possible as it will put considerably less strain on your back and feet.

I’ve included a picture of a backpacking towel so you have a rough idea what they look like. It doesn’t really convey just how thin and small they are, but it’s the best I could do.

The price of these towels has also fallen dramatically in recent years and these microfiber backpacking towels can now be picked up for as little as $25, and perhaps less if you don’t go for the extra large option. They are stocked by all good backpacking equipment stores and online retailers such as Amazon.

Hopefully this article has done enough to convince you that taking good microfiber backpacking towel away with you is a must. They’ve made my live so much easier in recent years, I can’t stress enough how important they are.
