Regardless of whether your backpacking through a major European cities or the Russian outback, you will need a constant supply of water. Particularly in the summer where temperatures can easily reach 40 degrees in the South of Europe, if you don’t take care of your body by constantly refuelling it with water you will soon become weak and it will be difficult to walk the long distances required to get the most out of your trip.
Hiking water bottles are one of the best ways of carrying water around with you. Some backpacks will have separate pockets that will hold the water bottles whilst you walk leaving your hands free. Whilst this is does relieve the weight from your hands and arms it means that you cannot access the bottle unless you remove the backpack from your back, which can be a pain. Some backpacks counter this by placing the bottles in more accessible places so double check before you make a purchase.
Waist packs can be a great way to carry hiking water bottles. They fit snugly round all wastes due to adjustable straps and are accessible at all times. Some will also have pockets where you can keep important documents such as passports or visas and you can be sure they are safe as they are close to your body. Most also have extra pockets so that snacks can also be stored and accessed easily.
There are also attachments available so that water bottles can be carried around the neck. Whilst this is great for access I personally find them quite a pain as the strap can rub against the skin on your neck and cause it to become sore. The water bottle can also get in the way when your map reading or taking a break to cook a meal.
